St. Petersburg Times (FL) - August 21, 1998 

KOLLEIN, JOHN MARTIN, 76, of Spring Hill, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998)
at James A. Haley VA Medical Center, Tampa. Born in Deans, N.J., he came
here 13 years ago from Willow Springs, Ill. He was a retired construction
contractor and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209, Spring Hill.
Survivors include a companion, Pauline Harry, Spring Hill.
Robert and Son Cremation Service, Spring Hill/Brooksville.

Family Recipe Friday: Snickerdoodles!!!

'The Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles are probably German in origin, and that the name is a corruption of the German word Schneckennudeln , a kind of pastry. A different author suggests that the word "snicker" comes from the German word Schnecke, which describes a snail shape.  Yet another hypothesis suggests that the name has no particular meaning or purpose and is simply a whimsically named cookie that originated from a New England tradition of fanciful cookie names.' Perhaps someone with experience in researching Hungarian records could help me define this place.

I occasionally receive these emails from ancestry; Thankfully they do not fill your inbox with a barrage  of emails.  Sometimes the hints are irrelevant, or I have already located the item they are pointing to, but sometimes they lead to something I had not yet gathered.
Below is the email notice I received today:

Certificate of Arrival on the SS LaTouraine

Above is the Certificate of Arrival for our Great Aunt Becker who arrived in New York in August 1912 aboard the SS La Touraine.

Built in France, SS La Touraine was an ocean liner that sailed for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique from the 1890s to the 1920s and was initially equipped with accommodations for 392 first-class, 98 second-class, and 600 third-class passengers. 

Westbound from Havre to New York, La Touraine was in wireless contact with Titanic during the afternoon and evening of April 12,1912, until about 9 p.m.. Around 8 p.m.,  La Touraine  transmitted ice warnings describing field ice and two large icebergs in the vicinity of 43° N., 42.8° W.
