Towns of our Ancestors - Doeden of Appingedam, Netherlands

Appingedam, a trading seaport located in northeastern Netherlands, came into existence around 1200. This was the hometown of Jan Doeden, a cooper, who arrived in Philadelphia and settled in  Germantown during the time of William Penn.  In the earliest years of the Germantown settlement, Jan Doeden farmed and grew apples and pears on the lot just north of the Pastorius tract.
Many original medieval premises can still be found in the center of Appingedam. The most famous sight is the hanging kitchens above the Damsterdiep channel.

Gaius Julius Caesar, dictator of the Roman Republic, was assassinated on the Ides of March (March 15), 44 B.C., by a group of senators including his close friend, Marcus Junius Brutus

Julius Caesar's body was cremated in a great fire that lasted all the night long.  His ashes are located in the temple of Caesar, on the east side of the main square of the Roman Forum.
