Wedding Wednesday: Leah Warburton to Isaac Moore - Trowbridge, Wiltshire

Below is the 1823 marriage announcement for Leah Warburton (b. 1804) daughter of John & Lydia (Sandiford) Warburton, to Isaac Moore.  They were married on 26 March 1823.  It is interesting that the newspaper has her name as Mary Ann, but all other records I have found for her are consistent with the name 'Leah'. The date, names of the spouse and her father, a well known Baptist minister, are correct, so I am confident this announcement is for Leah.

Finding a Sister Through Census Records

Below is the 1799 marriage record for Peggy Warburton and Charles Patefield.

This marriage for Margaret Warburton states she is of Manchester. My notes for her family so far had citations to Prestwich, Lancashire, and referred to her as Peggy. I needed to verify I had the correct person. How did I confirm this was the right Warburton female?
By following Margaret/Peggy Patefield through some of the later census records, I was able to match year and location of birth with Peggy's baptism record.  But the clincher was found in the 1851 census record where at age 74, she is listed as a widow, head of household, with her widowed brother, William Warburton, residing with her.

Lancashire Parish Records - Free Online Resource

OnLine Parish Clerks project for the County of Lancashire extracts and preserves records from various parishes and provides free online access to that information along with other data of value to family and local historians conducting research in the County of Lancashire.

I have found this site to be a treasure trove of information and was able to greatly enhance some of our family 'branches'.  Surnames I am researching in this area:  Warburton, Sandiford, Barlow, and affiliates in the parishes of Radcliffe & Prestwich.

The surname of Esther is interesting in that I have identified no other Sligoes in this county. In fact, a general search overall turns up very little on this surname.  There are, however, Higo/Higoes in this  parish, so I may find a connection there.

John Warburton - A Particular Baptist

Zion Strict or Particular Baptist Chapel, Union Street, Trowbridge, originated in 1813 with the secession of 41 worshippers from the Back Street congregation in consequence of their disapproval of the doctrines preached by its newly appointed minister. The original premises on Wicker Hill, near the Town Bridge, was rented from Thomas Timbrell, and the congregation worshiped in the upper room. Our ancestor, John Warburton, was the first settled pastor of this church being appointed in 1815.  His popular preaching overfilled the premises so that in 1816 the congregation was obliged to purchase a site in Union Street, and there erected a chapel capable of seating 700.
Zion Chapel graveyard was closed in 1856, but Zion Baptist Church still welcomes members today.

Occupation: Burler

Elizabeth Warburton, wife, age 23, Burler
1851 UK Census: Wiltshire > Trowbridge > District 2k

Burler or Spiler
Burling was women’s work. Any small pieces of vegetable matter (called spile) still left in the cloth were removed by hand. Women used burling irons which looked like small tweezers, to get rid of spile. Loose threads were also removed but that was generally done after fulling. By the 18th century, Master Burlers supervised the operation and paid women to do the work.

North Wiltshire Online Census Project

North Wiltshire Online Census Project

UK 19th century census returns are being transcribed in order to create an online "free-for-view" searchable database.
Current searchable years include 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, and 1891.
This is part of an ongoing initiative to make records of relevance to UK genealogy freely available online.

By using the 'find' box that appears with the command key Ctrl+F you can do keyword / surnames searches on the site.  I entered just the first part of Warburton and was able to locate our ancestor John H. Warburton with his family in the 1871 census:

as well as his father, James, a widower, aged 72:

Surname Saturday - Cassingham / Casingham

On this beautiful fall Surname Saturday morning I will highlight our Cassingham line.

Albert Odian (Frank) Cassingham married Emma Warburton on 12 June 1875 in Providence, Rhode Island, and later moved to  Middleboro, Massachusetts where Frank was last recorded in 1892 as an employee at Star Mills.  We have not located a death or burial record for A.O. Frank Cassingham but believe it to be between 1892 & 1895 when Emma Warburton Cassingham is recorded as marrying John K. Smith.

Albert Odian Cassingham was born c. 1840 in Aldington, Ashford, Kent, England - the son of Odian Cassingham and Harriet Dean.

His father, Odian Cassingham, was born 23 Apr 1807 in Woodchurch, Kent, England - the son of John Casingham and Ann Barber.

John Casingham was baptised 7 Apr 1775  Presbyterian, Tenterton, Kent, England and was the son of John Casingham (born c. Apr 1737) and Alice Sampson.

Our line ends with the parents of John Casingham :  Thomas Casingham and Katherine Ordian married in Saint Mary Bredin (pictured on right), Canterbury, Kent, England, on Aug 3rd, 1731.
