Obituary: John Martin Kollein of NJ > IL > FL


St. Petersburg Times (FL) - August 21, 1998 


KOLLEIN, JOHN MARTIN, 76, of Spring Hill, died Wednesday (Aug. 19, 1998)
at James A. Haley VA Medical Center, Tampa. Born in Deans, N.J., he came
here 13 years ago from Willow Springs, Ill. He was a retired construction
contractor and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209, Spring Hill.
Survivors include a companion, Pauline Harry, Spring Hill.
Robert and Son Cremation Service, Spring Hill/Brooksville.

Black Sheep Sunday: Darn that Prohibition Law!

                 
In 1922, our Great Grandfather, Ignatz Kollain, was ...ah....caught.

Prohibition began on 17 January 1920, with the Eighteenth Amendment. A total of 1,520 Federal Prohibition agents were given the task of enforcing the law.  The Amendment was repealed in 1933.

Finding the Details in a Draft Registration Card

The Draft Registration card for Martin Kollein is one of the few places where we see a place of birth for one of the Kollain/Kollein family members.  Although not specific to a town, it is slight improvement over the usual "Austria-Hungary" seen in other records.
